Our usual go-to place for Christmas trees is the lovely Home Depot on Imperial Avenue. It's quick and easy to get in, pick a tree and get out. Paying for it is a different matter. Poor grandma would roll over in her grave if she knew we paid $117 for a seven foot tree. Oh well... we are not ready for a plastic tree yet no matter how 'real' they may look.
A lot of people wait until much closer to Christmas to get their trees but we find that the sooner you get it and put it in water the longer it will last. Now we can decide when to bring it in and dress it for the holidays. Last year's tree had a bird nest in it and a lot of dirt and debris. This year the tree is fresher and pretty clean... though I don't think the 20% jump in price has anything to do with that.
So since Andrew is in charge of the decorating... I'll just sit back and wait for instructions. Being happily retired affords me that luxury.

Well we made it through another Black Friday without standing in line to buy discounted merchandise that no one wanted to buy before. Black Friday on Amazon is much easier but the list of items discounted is the same... mostly plastic crap from China that didn't sell at inflated prices or products on the discontinued list.
Andrew and I don't buy Christmas presents for each other. Instead, we buy spontaneous gifts at different times of the year when we see a need or... just to be nice. Most of our Christmas dollars go toward friends and family parties and to feed the food insecure. Past a certain age you just run out of meaningful ways to say thank you for a gift you will never use or plan to re-gift to some unsuspecting person. Now for our annual White Elephant gift exchanges... if we have nothing to re-gift... we try to buy things that we would like for ourselves and maneuver to get them back. We consider that clever gifting.

Over the last several weeks I was amazed to hear some of our political pundits say that they thought Donald Trump would do what's best for the GOP and not for Donald Trump. Close... but no cigar. No matter what you think about Trump, and there are 846,911 adjectives to describe him, he plans to stand front-and-center until he can no longer stand. And then he will give us his best FDR impersonation in a Tesla powered wheel chair.

What could be better on a cool Fall evening than an Elton John concert at Petco Park. 40,000 cheering fans on their feet as Elton John cranked out 23 songs in 2 hours and 20 minutes. And while 'he's not the man he used to be... oh no' he had endearing energy and an honest love for his audience. On our feet for most of the show with a very small space to move around in we managed to dance and sing along with all our favorites without stepping on anyone or getting an elbow in the eye. It would be very hard to pick a favorite moment... perhaps his brief monologue when he told us that when this tour wraps in Spring 2023 he will indeed retire so he can spend quality time with his kids and his husband, David...or perhaps it was the high energy Crocodile Rock sing along. There was no opening act or boy dancers... just his longtime 6 member band of exceptional musicians. We would certainly do it again... but alas.

Andrew found his soulmate slot machine at the Aquarius Hotel and Casino and you have just never seen more joy in a face... win or loose... when the lights flash and that "Quick Spin" song starts playing.
Nothing like a four day car trip to pep up a slow week. We decided on Laughlin, Nevada as our destination as we had never been there before and as counseled by family. They will be hearing from our attorney:) Actually it was a fun and relaxing 4 days. As you do when you travel east, we went over the mountains and across the desert through Banning and 29 Palms... and yes there are 29 Palms... we counted them. Laughlin sits on the boarder with Arizona separated by the Colorado River. The people there seem quite red neck, conservative and highly addicted to cigarettes. We stayed at a Caesar's property, the Tropicana Hotel and Casino and I suspect because it is their slow season our three nights stay was comped which luckily offset our gambling losses. The Tropicana was like most of the 9 Hotel Casinos in Laughlin... it reeked of second hand smoke and was staffed by an obvious mix of happy and unhappy people. On the plus side... our non-smoking room was clean and comfortable. Read More
We took another long car trip on our first day to World Famous Oatman, Arizona on one of the remaining remnants of scenic Route 66. It's up in the hills and their claims to fame are three: Feral donkeys which you can feed for a buck (watch where you step) ... the now dilapidated Oatman Hotel where Carol Lombard and Clark Gable spent their honeymoon night in 1939, and that hotel bar interior today is plastered in dollar bills autographed by patrons over the years... an estimated 400,000 of them. One of them signed by Ronald Reagan back in the 70's. And like most places in Arizona there have to be Trump fans advertising for a 2024 comeback. Oy!
After Oatman we traveled south along the Colorado river to Lake Havasu to get a gander at the London Bridge. After all the hype we have heard about it I must say it was somewhat underwhelming. The story of how it came to be there is certainly worth more than the bridge itself. Lake Havasu is quite beautiful and the area is growing and growing. It offers everything a family with a boat, tent or RV could want... but not much else except, of course, the lovely Mohave Desert in all directions.
A fun four days... we drove a lot, ate a lot, slept a lot, gambled some and enjoyed a little boat cruise on the river. Sunny, dry and 93 every day was OK in the shade but beastly in the sun. Next time I want to go somewhere cold an rainy with fierce thunderstorms and where tornado threats abound.

This is one retiree that will not go back to work no matter how high inflation soars. I like having only 1 person telling me what to do. But sadly there are so many that have and will just to make ends meet. Ridiculous gas prices in California are in part, the result of poor leadership. The state wants to regulate ev erything else... why not a little better work on the oil companies. It is absurd to have oil refineries go off line for maintenance in sufficient numbers as to cause a gas shortage and escalating prices... and at the same time OPEC cuts back oil production just to screw us even more... REALLY? At a time when oil companies are boasting record profits off the backs of Californians... someone needs to slap them down a peg. The governor and his people won't do anything about it... but in spite of the sad political rhetoric, the reasons why have more to do with the fact that the top 2% are making big profits from the oil industry and the top 2% keep many of our politicians... well, satiated.
Our benevolent state government decided to take action and send each tax paying Californian a $200 check (dollar values may vary) as a 'sorry you are being pressured by inflation' gesture... and sadly because they couldn't figure out what else to do. Well I don't know where these politicians get their numbers, but $200 is barely enough to hire someone to pressure wash the bird crap off our solar panels. I can't wait until we see the news headlines about these $200 checks going out to our incarcerated Americans, illegal immigrants and dead people.
There is some good news however... prices for just about everything else keep going up too which makes the math easier. Perhaps this election year Californians will focus more on electing leaders who have plans to deal with the crushing impacts of inflation and not just on folks who claim to support a woman's right to choose. Fat chance.

I used to think that Angry Birds was the mother of all time suck but Tiktok has clearly stolen its thunder. This morning I saw a prominent news headline from the FDA warning all tiktokers of the dangers of cooking chicken in NyQuil. The so called "sleepy chicken challenge" ... which has apparently been around for some time, is apparently getting enough recent attention for the feds and even the Mayo Clinic to alert the media with warnings against it. Now I understand that boneless, skinless chicken breasts are virtually tasteless, but why NyQuil? It's nasty tasting on its own. I wonder how many will end up in the emergency room with sleepy chicken disease and will it be the same group that drank bleach in response to quality leadership from Donald Trump at the beginning of the COVID pandemic.
Kudos to parents of young tiktokers who have armed their children with the good sense not to engage these kinds of social influences and condolences to those who have not. Parenting has never been easy and in these days of non-stop online social influence... there should be awards for the survivors.
Personally I do not have a Tiktok account and I expect I will keep it that way. If I want to see morons try to outdo idiots and egomaniacs with narcissistic tendencies... I have only to watch the evening news... which I also do not recommend.

A classic retort following an earful of notable bitching and moaning might be to say that 'people in hell want ice water'. Well this week, so do the people of San Diego. It seems like it was just yesterday when I was blogging about San Diego, sunny and 75... and the occasional summer monsoon that brings us humid 80's. But this year takes the heat and humidity cake from last year and the year before. Quick... someone find a Republican and tell them that climate change is a real thing... a fact that is not really in dispute. The fist fights come from defining the degree to which it is man made versus evolutionary and how much we should suffer financially because of it.
But like most everything there are pluses and minuses. These hot days bring every crack-pot meteorologist front and center offering 842,911 reasons why it is so hot and humid but offering little solace than to say... 'stay in the shade and drink plenty of water'. But what about gin? They never say anything about drinking gin. If they were true scientists they would know that in moderation, gin is a near perfect beverage. It behaves much like a thermos helping you stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter and when used for a proper martini... its green olives help to keep your sodium levels in balance and your blood pressure from getting too low.
On the plus side, our smoker in the back yard uses a lot less wood when it's 101 degrees outside and a vigorous sweat cleans your pores, refreshes your skin and gives you room for a little more gin.

For those of you old enough to remember when the gallons flew by faster than the dollars on a gas pump, rest assured... you will never see that again. Today's generations will eventually look back too and remember when the kilowatt hours flew by faster than the dollars at the EV charging station (currently 33 to 60 cents/kWh). Today there are many who believe that electric vehicles will have a much shorter run than did the internal combustion engines we are phasing out now. Hydrogen and light weight proton reactors will be coming along before you know it.
If the environmentalists had it their way we would all be driving EVs by now which makes me wonder where all that electricity would come from. Every time I get my electric bill I see a frowny face telling me I am not working hard enough to save electricity with underlying threats of rolling blackouts... all summer long.
Last Thanksgiving whole Butterball turkeys at Costco were going for 99 cents a pound. Will we see prices like that again this year? Based on $22 for a single smoked turkey leg at the County fair it seems unlikely. So what should be the correct price be for turkey or for gas or electricity? As with most things of value the price is whatever a buyer is willing to pay. That concept started with the first caveman who would not include you in the spoils of the hunt... unless there was something in it for him... something that will likely continue until the last human breath. Collectively we bitch and moan and look for someone to blame but ultimately we pay the current price. In America you get what you pay for or what the government hands you... which we all pay for.

I think we can simplify things and still make sure our vision of inclusiveness holds true. Ever since the 80's when lesbians took over and put the L before the G the acronym to describe non straight people has gotten longer and longer. But it isn't used consistently which must make the newly added queers, the Q's, the I's, the A's and whatever the +'s are feel marginalized. Are groups that identify as LGBT deliberately excluding the QIA+'s or just socially a bit behind? It seems to me that the inclusiveness we seek could be better served by referring to non straight people as curved. Hey it's better than what the pride of Texas, Sen. Ted Cruz and his Florida cousin Ron DeSantis like to call us!
Truth be known, the curved reference, while easier and more inclusive, can still be vague and it may fail to answer some primary questions. Most seeking companionship or the company of like minds have the same unspoken questions. Are you penis or vagina and are you seeking penis or vagina or both. That, to countless millions, particularly among the young, is the start of all things. Who cares what you used to be or want to be... it's what you are at the moment that matters... to most.
We need a better communication system if we are are to avoid the all too common scenario where a straight boy picks up a woman in a bar and then beats him to death when he finds a cock in his pants. Back in the disco days we avoided a lot of misunderstandings with a simple system of handkerchiefs in the back pocket. I personally found it to be very helpful in avoiding a lot of awkward moments. Perhaps that's something queer leadership should consider instead of adding more letters to an already untenable acronym. And pronouns just don't get it done.

After a two year hiatus thanks to the ever popular COVID-19 Pandemic, San Diego is back to Pride normal... whatever that means to you. Andrew and I watched the parade from Balboa Park and it was very well and peacefully attended, joyously exuberant and of course... way too long.
Times change, trends change but some things never change like the politicians in the parade showing their best Curved friendly faces. A couple things stood out to me this year that hadn't really in the past. While I know that publicly shaming someone for being morbidly obese is a no no these days, I was taken aback by the large number of corpulent parade participants that seemed wonderfully at home letting it all hang out in short shorts, bikini tops and feathered boas. That and the fact that women certainly outnumbered men... in the parade, as spectators and queued for the festival... I seemed a little lost and found myself waxing nostalgic for the days when it was more about fabulous... gay men.
Favorite moment was the joy we saw in a young man's face as he moved up and down the parade route behind us with a bubble machine sending gazillions of bubbles out into the crowd. They tickled the back of our necks and brought smiles to everyone passing by and the boy's own joy... was delightfully infectious.

Lesson learned... when you knock on wood, knock loudly or your protection spell will fail. So it was with our attempt to avoid the scourge of Covid. A nasty little bug that should be called "Little old lady disease." It made us a little crabby with a gravelly voice like Bea Arthur, move slower than a tree sloth, walk stooped over cause your joints ache... you're hot one minute then cold the next and all with a dry hacking cough that accomplishes nothing... except to make your ribs ache. Who the hell invents these things?
We aren't sure how we caught it... we suspect it was from the crowds at the county fair but it could have come from Shamu at Sea World with whom we visited the day before. One thing for sure, I am certainly glad that we were vaccinated and boosted. OK so it was only two miserable days and two not quite miserable days but it is keeping us under self imposed quarantine for the 4th of July. We knew we would eventually get it... so many people we know have already been there and thankfully all survived.
Oh boy... we're on yet another list.

BackThe Supreme Court, by a narrow partisan margin, has overturned Roe v. Wade essentially saying that women do not have a constitutional right to an abortion. While many constitutional scholars will fundamentally agree, they would also agree that changing settled law by such a narrow margin reeks of partisanism and a serious lack of respect for the American people. My question is "Who Is Listening to the People?" Fortunately or perhaps not, the high court is not compelled to bend to the will of the people. But unlike the Supreme Court, we expect our elected congressional representatives to follow the will of their constituents and we certainly can hold them accountable at the ballot box. But do we... really?
Now, after all the shouting and crying subsides, when hopefully more level heads prevail, we will see how swiftly the people move to oust those in congress who oppose their will, and as it should be in our democracy... allow the people to rule. November could change the congressional balance enough to allow for a federal law establishing some degree of abortion rights. But don't expect to see it. People bitch and moan in this country all the time but are typically slow to act... just like congress.
States that protect abortion rights like California will welcome women from other states and in the wake, see anti-abortion aggression escalate and a variety of political maneuvers set in motion to attempt to punish women who cross state lines or 'import' abortion pills.
If abortion is indeed 'healthcare' then perhaps those that define healthcare should define 'life'. They argued for years over when a life was actually over... the moment of death. And today, with few exceptions, the definition of death is rarely disputed. But then there is no constitutional right to death... it's just inevitable. We already hear the rumblings in California... but for me, until their is consensus as to the definition of life, I would not support legislation or constitutional amendments to affirm a women's right to chose. Once 'life' is defined and accepted, a women's right to chose becomes mute. Let's see America focus on that.

BackAfter missing the San Diego County Fair for the past two Covid years it was nice to get back to that all too familiar gathering in Del Mar.
At first glance everything was laid out just as it had been the last many years but there were a few notable exceptions. We couldn't find our favorite chocolate covered bacon, or for that matter, some of the other culinary oddities the fair was known for like deep fried ice cream, twinkies and fried jello. And much to our chagrin, our beloved Turkey Races were missing this year too. Nothing better on a hot summer afternoon than a few cold beers and the world famous San Diego Turkey Stampede. We couldn't find anyone who could tell us why that event was missing this year... but when you saw the $22 price tag for a smoked turkey leg you kinda figure it might have been more economical to sell the turkeys than to race them.
This years theme was 'super heroes' but there was little evidence of that. All in all it was a good, pricey day. $15 to park, $15 to get in, $15 for a corn dog, $15 for a beer and $15 for three shots to win nothing in the arcade. It was no surprise that there were no long lines... but then again, it was a Thursday afternoon.

BackEarlier in the pandemic, about this time in 2020, there were many learned medicos who were sure that sooner or later we would all get COVID-19 and each would succumb or survive based on their own strengths and weaknesses. That seems to be the global lot. We have had a number of friends and family who have tested positive but no significant illnesses reported and knock wood... Andrew and I have eluded its wrath and sequela.
World news highlights suggest that Cholera and Polio are trying to make a comeback but for my money I am betting on a lovely simian disease called Monkey Pox. They say it is not an STD but it seems to be largely spread between people doing the horizontal mambo. Well we can use a diversion from inflation, the possibility of recession and another election cycle. Now may be the time to bury your gold in the backyard.

I have said it 842,911 times, life is so much easier when you stop watching and listening to the news. OK... you should scan the headlines so you don't feel like you live under a rock, but that's all. Regardless of the medium, and with rare exception, news outlets are concerned with one thing, and one thing only... making big money by getting you to read or watch their service and the myriad commercials that come your way. The more horrible the news, the more likely you will return for more, misguided by some notion that only the complete story with tomorrow's followup can fulfill you. Tired of hearing about inflation, guns and Roe v Wade... Biden, Trump and the murder of the day?
Terry Ernest - June 9, 2022
BackJust as there is no dark without light, there is no give without take. In our democratic republic it is the people that are supposed to determine to whom we give and from whom we take. Today people seem to be rigidly polarized along political party lines on a number of give and take issues. At the 10,000 foot level, the conservative elephants believe the world is made up of boys and girls and any other iteration should be silenced in the shadows. Further they believe that a woman's right to choose cannot override the right to life, however undefined. Moreover, liberal donkeys believe that a parent (mother) should be able to take her 6 year old male child for gender reassignment treatments if he exhibits a limp wrist or an affinity to play with dolls. And donkeys believe that because there is no clear definition of 'when it is life and when it is just growing tissue' that a woman should have the sole right to decide how to manage her pregnancy without restrictions by the state.
Among all this the only middle ground, fleeting and fiercely divisive, is that which is mandated by state and federal governments... supported by the partisan justices of the Supreme Court and largely along our two party political lines. Today's majority rule creates neither moral nor social balance and seems to broaden the divide.
Perhaps our collective focus should be to clearly define our inalienable rights... what is life, what is liberty and how may we all pursue happiness? Clear definitions in a constitutional amendment, enacted by way of a Constitutional Convention, ratified by a 3/4 vote. Such an action should negate the need to argue the Roe v Wades and Don't Say Gays that so divide us and perhaps, allow us to move forward.

Back... these judicial royals might have benefited from the wisdom of our founding fathers who believed a wife belonged at home, barefoot and silent in the kitchen. Now with the likes of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others in congress shouting for action, Clarence and Virginia Thomas might have some back peddling to do. Refuse to recuse may get you accused and excused.
... shameful is just one of many words used to describe the Oscar spectacle but if you look closely at the video of the incident, this has all the earmarks of a put up job. Not only did Will Smith laugh at the alleged 'offending joke' but post slap, as he returned to his seat from the stage, he had a devilish smirk on his face, nothing that resembled anger. This was little more than King Richard vanity run amok...for which Will Smith will pay dearly... at least in the short term.
... big mouths seem to flourish better on the radio and Alex Jones may soon rue the day he decided to take on the Sandy Hook massacre with his poisonous conspiracy theories. The victims families of this 2003 tragedy will not be paid off by Jones so he can continue filling his pockets with his bilious attempts at redefining the First Amendment.

BackIt doesn't seem that long ago while candidates were campaigning for political office that you could tell who was slinging mud at whom and who was taking responsibility for their campaign ads by posting that well known political platitude... "I approve this Message." Somehow that has been lost in the California race to fill the 80th district's congressional seat thoughtfully vacated by Lorena Gonzalez. Andrew and I have received dozens of fliers in the mail supporting and berating both candidates and on every one there is a disclaimer that says "Ad paid for by ... (some PAC), Sponsored by ... (lists of unions or other PACS), and each with a final disclaimer... "Not Authorized by a candidate or a committee controlled by a candidate." Controlled apparently being the operative word. Now what kind of campaigning is that? It's hard enough to separate reasonable reality from bullshit coming directly from the candidates... now we have to figure out who these not affiliated PACS are and what's in it for them. Give me good old fashioned Trump style campaigning where anything goes and let the winner be decided by the candidate who convinces the most voters... always remembering that the intellectually impaired have an equal voice. And while the political process is apparently a necessary evil... there's no reason it shouldn't be entertaining.
Terry Ernest - March 25, 2022
BackWhile I understand some of the basics of energy economics... I don't understand why every geopolitical hiccup in the world sends oil prices soaring and 'we the people' foot the bill. Where does all that extra money go when oil goes from $90/barrel to $130? Obviously the people with all the money get all the more money and use every ounce of global turmoil as an excuse to justify it. Now that the Biden administration has put the kibosh on Russian energy imports they are apparently looking for other imports to fill the gap. But why should the worlds largest energy producer, America as we boast, need to import oil from anywhere else? The reason is simple ...the alleged global market (cartel) sets the oil prices to makes sure the 1% gets to stay the 1%... and add to that, of course, a few prickly environmentalists that don't want us to '...mar the grandeur' (thank you Teddy Roosevelt).
So I wonder why we allow this. Today the war in Ukraine is largely being blamed for the current gas hikes and we are led to believe that our sacrifice at the pump will help 'stick it to Putin.' Nice try! Thank God we don't import toilet paper from Russia or we would could be paying $3 a wipe and believing that we would be taking a buck-fifty out of billionaire Putin's pocket. Would we stand for that like we do $6 a gallon for gas?
What if America could stand alone on energy production could we then pull out of the global cartel and set oil prices reasonably based on American supply and demand? Of course not... the 1% have sufficient power to keep this from happening and many political careers need to maintain that status quo. Drive less to pay less is our only real option at this time but will that become a national anthem? Unlikely... Americans will bitch, blame and complain and no doubt rob and burn a few gas stations but do little else. And our elected officials will predictably throw up their hands claiming there is nothing they can do... but they understand our concerns.

BackPoor Paranoid President Putin, aka P4... doesn't believe he1 has enough allies and war assets to protect the motherland, so naturally he must take control of Ukraine in order to provide an additional security buffer against the nefarious people of Poland. While we all know that the Polish have been up in arms for years because Russia won't purchase their fair share of genuine Polish sausage, but really...does P4 need Ukraine to say NO to Poland? Of course not... P4 is using the war against Ukraine to satiate his egomania disguised as a fear of NATO states on his boarders all preceded by the false flag narrative that Ukraine is the aggressor and Russia the victim.
Does this ring a bell? Seems back in 2003, the US, under the misguided leadership of George W Bush, invaded Iraq in order to affect a regime change. At that time we were bombarded by the news media affirming a false narrative that Iraq was behind the 911 attacks and threatens world order with weapons of mass destruction. In the blitz that flattened Baghdad we, together with coalition forces, killed 100,000+ people only to find out that we were as wrong as Putin. Our excuse was alleged to be 'bad intelligence.' Putin's is still somewhat undefined. Neither war was sanctioned by the UN Security Counsel.
The atrocities happening in Ukraine are being echoed around the world but is our righteous indignation
a little one sided? We absolutely should be helping Ukraine defend itself but perhaps we could tone down our rhetoric of moral superiority. If what Putin is doing to Ukraine makes him a war criminal how do we defend the Bush Administration's egregious failures in Iraq?
At some point P4 will realize that he has gone as far as he can go and at that time, if he hasn't reached his goal, he may strike out at NATO which could very well trigger WWW3... remembering that rats will strike when cornered.
Biden's apparently slow but continuous sanctions against Russia may be the way to go. But now is the time for Americans to buck up and consent to drive a little less and walk a little more to offset high gas prices and encourage the international community to institute a massive boycott of Russian energy (everything) in all forms. And in trade off Biden can open up America's massive oil capacity, restore reasonable gas prices and finally say UP YOURS to Russia and other foreign gas and oil. With enough economic pressure the Russian people may well do a Lindsey Graham on P4.
1-It is unclear what P4's preferred pronouns are.

BackReally? We just get most of our asses out of Afghanistan after 20 years and 2 trillion dollars for which we accomplished next to nothing... and now they open the American purse strings once more to support our NATO allies against that sad Hitler wanna-be Vladimir Putin and his selfish need to bring Ukraine back into the frozen bosom of mother Russia. It doesn't matter if the Russian people suffer, under Putin's leadership they are used to it. But what about the rest of Eastern Europe and me? Not that we actually get anything from Russia except dirty crude oil, bullshit and cyber attacks... but who is paying this bill in support of a country that isn't a NATO ally and doesn't pay their fare share into the NATO war fund? I realize we can't turn a blind eye on the crisis in Ukraine but do we have to stand front and center acting like we know what we're doing? I know we think we are all that but if you look our failure in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan and at the state of America today, I'm not sure that's so true anymore. Perhaps we could spend more time working on the American war on crime, poverty, homelessness and education and let the Europeans lead the fight for Ukraine.

BackAnother Winter Olympics showcasing wonderful young talent, and a few old ones... selfish, ego-maniacal handlers, too many political tones and lots of sour grapes. Nathan Chen brought our favorite 'Gold' moment with amazing grace and dignity and the rest was mostly drama. For my money, the Olympics has become too sexist. A men's team, a women's team and now the transsexuals want their opportunities to match their pronouns instead of their anatomy. What's next - separate events for left handed Presbyterian athletes or perhaps those who choose to switch their country allegiance to pander for corporate endorsements?
China Olympic Committee Brilliant opening and closing ceremony visual effects. Russian Olympic Committee Cheaters never prosper, doping children makes you look selfish and greedy and remember, always use at least two fingers when saluting an America team. Team Finland - 29th place cross country skiers are supposed to freeze their butts off, not their dicks. Heavy Young Heathens... at least someone got to hear your cover of "The House of the Rising Sun" you should be grateful rather than litigious. Sha'Carri Richardson... anger over being denied an Olympic spot because you smoked pot is understandable... and drawing a parallel to the Valieva case is reasonable, but did you have to drop the black card? And to the athletes that are compelled to compete for teams other than their home country team... boo to you, Gu!

BackAre we blessed to have world leaders that only want the best for us and the planet on which we live? Vladimir Putin has made it crystal clear that Ukraine has no right to sovereignty and he wants Ukraine back under the Russian flag. Xi Jinping nods in agreement with Putin while staying silent (in public) ever watchful of Putin's moves hoping they will lead China's path to restore Taiwan under its communist belt. Meanwhile Emmanuel Macron, President of France and (currently) of the EU, sees himself as the final arbiter of the eastern European crisis and surreptitiously wants Biden and Blinken to keep their noses out of what he sees as his and Europe's business. Biden, who certainly sees himself as the most powerful man in the world, just can't help waving American imperialism into everyones face. In spite of their differences, however; these four countries have much in common like hunger, homelessness, poverty, gross social inequality and leaders with an unwavering strength to put the burden of their self-obsessed desires on the backs of those who have so much less. Regardless of the outcome of the Ukrainian 'crisis' the millions and billions of dollars that you and I will pay will do little more than satiate egos run amok.. at least until the next crisis comes along.

BackWhat an amusing and quintessential "double entendre" with tongue-in-cheek "reductio ad absurdum" and yet... a truism, none the less. If you believe in "contemporary wisdom" that suggests that 70 is the new 50 then perhaps we should cut you open and count your rings. 70 is 70 and it can be great. For myself I have had a great ride for 70 years and I look forward to 70 more. Unfortunately I am only budgeted to 92... and good or bad, Kovarik men don't live that long so I should be all set.
Andrew is a large part of my success with his indefatigable good humor and honest love. With Andrew you can expect no less than 5 smiles each day and helping him maintain that remarkable achievement is one of my greatest pleasures.
70 years old... it's hard to fathom where the time has gone. Some days it feels like it was just yesterday... my 19th birthday and I was water skiing with the Seabees in Cam Ranh Bay, South Vietnam... and some days that memory seems a million years ago. Well however that works I'm glad that I still have those memories and even if it occasionally takes a belt of the 12 year old to recall them... I still can. They say you should strive to grow old with dignity, and while I have no idea what that really means, I can tell you that I get an overwhelming urge to kick any young person who calls me 'pops'. How dignified is that?

BackSome of the most outrageous things we have heard from anyone in the political spotlight have come from "Your Pillow" guy, Mike Lindell. Take his monstrous assertions that he has enough evidence to jail some 300 million Americans for voter fraud... and that it was China who facilitated the election steal by tampering with the electronic voting machines. He shouts his 'facts' loud and proud yet can produce NO evidence. And when pressed on these issues he demands that reporters "report it.. don't fact check it." According to pseudo-reliable news sources, Mike Lindell has spent some $25 million of your pillow dollars in his attempt to be head Trumpophile... but he didn't do it alone. That shit eating grin on his face comes from his nightly briefings from Georgia dark force leader Marjorie Taylor Greene who comes to him in dreams and omens whispering the latest in election fraud and anti-socialist propaganda. And how do you suppose Trump will reward Mike Lindell for his exemplary service now that Ghislaine Maxwell is in prison?

BackRemember what happened to the price of corn when scientists and capitalists discovered its value as bio-fuel? Remember when you could get 10 ears of corn for a dollar? Now brace yourself for a similar twist as the first pig to human heart transplant has been completed, successfully, in Maryland. But it wasn't an ordinary pig... no, no, no... it was a very expensive pig genetically groomed for human transplantation. Oscar Meyer is furious because their purchased pork can't be used for anything but bacon and spare ribs and they are afraid that pig farmers will decline to sell to them at $3/lb on the hoof when on the scientific market they could get a whole lot more. How much more will certainly impact the price of pork so now may be a good time to fill up your freezers. We will have to wait and see if the world of cardiology will re-write its tenet claiming pork isn't good for your heart... and if pig heart recipients develop any new porcine habits. Oink... Oink.

BackQuick as a winkin you can bet Biden and Blinken have already defined their strategy for our involvement in Ukraine should the Russians decide to invade again. We have a lot of European allies but should this be our business? The Ukraine and its boarder states of Belarus and Poland to the North, and the Slovaks and Hungarians to the West should be enough to make a stand against Putin... besides they must have the support of all the vampires and other blood suckers (not in Washington) from Romania and Moldavia to stand with Ukraine. Maybe it's time for Ukraine to join NATO and pay their fair share of neighborhood security... but it's probably too late. God only knows how much this will cost us.
Let's see... Biden's poll numbers are on the low side, could this be shaping up to be another expensive Clinton era Bosnia and Herzegovina diversion? Nod if we can help it. Quick... someone check the oval office for a stained blue dress! Just sayin.....
